In the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and daily chemical packaging sectors, aluminum bottle caps have become the mainstream capping category due to their advantages such as strong sealing, recyclability, high-quality feel, and compatibility with automated filling. Currently, many packaging plants and bottle cap OEMs have a cost control misconception: focusing solely on the unit price of aluminum bottle cap materials while ignoring the hidden costs throughout the entire process from raw material warehousing, production processing, post-processing to shipment, thus failing to achieve precise cost reduction.

I. Selection of Two Core Aluminum Materials

1. 8011 Aluminum Closure Sheet

The aluminium plain sheet 8011 has moderate hardness and excellent ductility, low stamping defect rate, strong oxidation resistance, mature rolling technology, ample stock, and low purchase price. It is suitable for shallow stamping and conventional thread processing, and has good adhesion for surface printing and coloring.

It is suitable for affordable and general-purpose categories such as pharmaceutical oral liquid aluminum caps, small and medium-sized anti-theft caps for liquor, condiments, tea drinks, and ordinary daily chemical screw caps. It is the first choice for large-scale standardized mass production in small and medium-sized factories and is suitable for conventional bottle caps with simple structures.

2. 3105 Aluminum Bottle Cap Material

Its rust-resistant performance, tensile and compressive strength, and torsional fatigue resistance are far superior to 8011. It has a low ear-making rate and excellent deep-drawing performance, allowing for the processing of irregularly shaped and thickened tamper-evident bottle caps. It is suitable for applications requiring internal pressure, high-frequency opening and closing, and high sealing. The raw material is produced using a hot-rolling process, resulting in higher production costs and a higher price per ton than 8011 aluminum.

3105 aluminum sheet is mainly used for high-value-added packaging such as pressure-resistant tamper-evident caps for red wine, sparkling wine, carbonated beverages, high-end craft beer, large-diameter pickle sealing caps, and high-end cosmetic opening and closing aluminum caps.

II. Four Core Production Costs of Aluminum Bottle Caps

1. Raw Material Costs (58%-65% of total cost, core cost item)

Aluminum is the primary cost expenditure. Alloy type, thickness, coating, and procurement method directly affect cost. Firstly, there's the material used. 8011 commonly uses 0.20-0.28mm thin aluminum coils, resulting in low aluminum consumption per cap. 3105, on the other hand, often uses 0.28-0.35mm thicker base material, increasing aluminum consumption per cap by over 15%. Large manufacturers procure virgin aluminum coils, reducing costs by 3% per ton compared to using recycled materials from individual suppliers.

Secondly, there's the coating cost. Food and pharmaceutical aluminum caps require double-sided environmentally friendly coatings. Pharmaceutical-grade 8011 uses a sterile pharmaceutical coating, which commands the highest premium. Ordinary beverages can use a food-grade epoxy coating. High-end 3105 adds a matte, wear-resistant coating, increasing costs by 4%.

Thirdly, there's production loss. 8011's shallow-drawing process is stable, with a 4%-6% loss during mass production. 3105 has a high scrap rate during deep-drawing and irregular-shaped processing, with a 7%-9% loss. Small-batch customization adds an additional 5% loss.

2. Machining and Forming Costs (18%-22% of total cost)

The processing flow is standardized: aluminum coil uncoiling → cutting and blanking → stretching and forming → thread rolling → edge trimming. The processing costs of the two aluminum materials differ significantly. 8011aluminum has lower hardness, requiring less equipment load, with a production capacity of 220-260 pieces per minute and lower energy and labor costs. 3105 has higher hardness, requiring greater processing pressure, resulting in 12% higher energy consumption for the same production capacity, with a production capacity of only 160-190 pieces per minute and higher labor costs.

Additionally, 3105 causes faster mold wear, requiring 1.6 times the mold maintenance and replacement frequency of 8011. Furthermore, high-end 3105 anti-theft covers require additional processing steps: anti-theft ring, pressure testing, and thread finishing, increasing the processing cost per piece by 0.012-0.02 yuan.

3. Post-processing + Auxiliary Materials + Quality Inspection Costs (10%-14% of total cost)

These are easily overlooked hidden costs. In terms of surface treatment, 8011aluminum cap stock is suitable for low-cost processes such as monochrome printing and matte lamination; 3105 is mostly used for high-end customized processes such as hot stamping and embossing, resulting in a higher rework rate.

Regarding sealing materials, 8011aluminum sheet is paired with inexpensive PE foam gaskets, while pressure-bearing 3105 aluminum sheet requires food-grade silicone and composite pressure-resistant gaskets, doubling the gasket cost.

In terms of quality inspection and packaging, pharmaceutical aluminum caps require dust-free sterilization and full microbial testing, while high-end wine caps require individual pressure and torsion testing, leading to an overall 3% increase in packaging material costs for high-end products.

4. Factory Operation and Maintenance + Management Amortization Costs (5%-7% of total costs) This is a fixed amortization cost, covering utilities, labor, environmental protection, equipment depreciation, and warehouse rent. 8011 has a high degree of standardization and mass production automation, resulting in high single-person capacity and extremely low unit amortization; 3105 requires small-batch, custom-made production, dedicated personnel for machine adjustment and quality control, and has higher standards for environmental management and waste aluminum disposal, significantly increasing labor and operation and maintenance amortization costs.
