All-aluminum cans, also known as two-piece cans, are composed of a can body and a can lid, which are manufactured on different production lines using different aluminum alloys. In fact, the can lid is also composed of two workpieces, namely the lid body and the tab-sealing piece. They are produced on highly automated lines using different alloys and aluminum strips of different thicknesses.
The can body is made of 3004 alloy strip with a thickness of 0.25mm-0.29mm, the aluminium cap seal for cans is made of 5082 alloy or 5182 alloy thin strip with a thickness of about 0.27mm, and the pull ring is made of 5052 aluminum alloy and occasionally 5182 alloy. Currently, the countries in the world that can produce body stock and end stock include the United States, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Russia, Australia, China, etc.
More than 97% of can body materials are rolled into coils by semi-continuous ingots on (1+3) or (1+4) hot rolling lines. Then use a cold tandem rolling line or a single-stand four-roller irreversible cold rolling mill to roll into a thin strip of required thickness. The cap seal and the pull ring can be rolled on a general four-roller single-stand hot rolling mill, or on a hot continuous rolling line.
There are two types of aluminum cap seal material: one with pre-coating and the other without. The coating can be pre-coated in the rolling mill or applied in a specialized post-coating plant. The pre-coating is in rolls, while the post-coating is mostly in pieces. The modern capping line uses coiled materials, the number of cup punching machine stations (out) is 20-24, and the material width is 1500mm-1550mm; the sheet width used in the block production line is 850mm-970mm. The thickness of the cover material is 0.27mm.
The status of the can body material is H19, that is, the cold rolling rate should reach 88%. The comprehensive yield rate from surface milling (two major surfaces) in the hot rolling section to cold rolling to the finished product is currently 70% in the world. If we calculate 3% melting and casting loss and milling on all sides, the comprehensive yield is only about 65%. 5182 aluminum sheet is usually used for the can lid.
The production of can lids is to first make basic lids and pull tabs on two production lines, and then combine them to form a combined lid. Cover materials not only have many width specifications, but also have more thickness specifications, ranging from 0.22mm to 0.315mm, such as 0.23mm, 0.25mm, 0.27mm, 0.28mm, and 0.30mm.
