What Is the Thickness Of Aluminum Cap Stock

2026-07-15

In the packaging industry, aluminum bottle caps have become the preferred packaging accessory for products such as wine, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and condiments due to their advantages of being lightweight, corrosion-resistant, having good sealing properties, and being recyclable. The thickness of the aluminum bottle cap material directly determines the cap's processing performance, performance, and production cost.

I. Core Applications of Aluminum Bottle Cap Material

1. ROPP Bottle Caps

ROPP caps are widely used for wine, spirits, edible oils, and premium beverages. They are rolled onto the bottle neck to create a tamper-evident seal. Once opened, they cannot be restored. They require aluminum cap stock with good ductility, strength, and thickness consistency to ensure reliable sealing and a premium appearance.

2. Screw Caps

Screw caps seal by twisting onto the bottle and can be reopened and reused. They are commonly used for beverages, mineral water, oral liquids, and condiments. They require accurate threads and sufficient rigidity to prevent leakage. Material thickness should balance performance and cost.

II. Basis for Selecting Aluminum Cap Material Thickness

The mainstream industry thickness range is 0.15mm-0.5mm. The specific selection needs to be based on a comprehensive judgment of the cap type, processing technology, product characteristics, and usage scenario.

1. Selection of Aluminum Thickness for ROPP Bottle Caps

Roll forming is the core of ROPP bottle cap processing, which requires aluminum with sufficient ductility and good post-forming rigidity to prevent deformation and cracking. According to industry experience and practical applications, the suitable aluminum thickness for ROPP caps ranges from 0.20mm to 0.28mm, with 0.22mm-0.25mm being the mainstream.

If the thickness is below 0.20mm, the aluminum ROPP cap stock lacks enough rigidity, easily causing edge wrinkles and deformation during roll forming. It may even fail to fit tightly with bottle neck threads, reducing sealing and anti-theft performance, and the cap may break when opened.

On the contrary, thickness over 0.28mm increases aluminum hardness, reduces ductility and raises roll forming difficulty. This not only accelerates equipment wear but also leads to uneven cap edges, affecting packaging aesthetics. Additionally, overly thick aluminum increases raw material costs and weakens product market competitiveness.

Specifically, for ROPP caps of high-end alcoholic beverages like wine and spirits, 0.23mm-0.25mm aluminum is recommended, which ensures good roll forming effect and enhances cap texture. For ordinary wine and juice ROPP caps, 0.20mm-0.22mm aluminum is sufficient to meet performance needs while controlling costs.

2. Thickness Selection for Screw Caps

Screw cap processing focuses on thread forming and tight sealing, requiring high aluminum rigidity and forming precision, as well as easy opening. Their suitable aluminum screw cap stock thickness is slightly lower than that of ROPP caps, with the mainstream range being 0.18mm-0.25mm, adjustable for different scenarios.

For screw caps of mass-market beverages (mineral water, carbonated drinks), which are often carried daily and opened frequently, cost control is crucial. Thus, 0.18mm-0.20mm aluminum is recommended. This thickness ensures good formability for precise thread machining, reduces packaging and transportation costs due to light weight, and provides a comfortable opening feel without excessive twisting resistance.

For screw caps used in pharmaceutical oral liquids, condiments and high-end bottled water (requiring high sealing and safety), 0.20mm-0.25mm aluminum is advisable. Thickness below 0.18mm leads to insufficient cap rigidity, causing thread deformation after tightening and poor sealing, which shortens product shelf life. Thickness over 0.25mm, though providing enough rigidity, increases machining difficulty (prone to thread deviation) and opening resistance, impairing user experience.

3. Other Key Factors Affecting Thickness Selection

Besides the cap type, several other factors influence the thickness selection of aluminum cap material and should be considered during selection:

Firstly, the aluminum alloy grades and tempers. Currently, 8011 aluminum alloy is the primary aluminum material used for bottle caps, commonly available in H14, H16, and H18 tempers. Different tempers offer varying hardness and ductility, requiring appropriate thickness selection. For example, H16 aluminum has higher strength, suitable for processing thinner screw caps; H14 aluminum has better ductility, suitable for ROPP bottle cap roll forming.

Secondly, the product's operating environment must be considered. If the product requires high-temperature sterilization (e.g., pharmaceutical oral liquids, canned goods) or low-temperature storage (e.g., frozen beverages), a slightly thicker aluminum material is recommended to enhance the cap's temperature resistance and deformation resistance. If the product is a general consumer good stored at room temperature, a standard thickness can be used to balance performance and cost.

Thirdly, the precision of the processing equipment is crucial. If the production equipment has high precision and can accurately control the processing, a slightly thinner aluminum material can be used to reduce costs. If the equipment's precision is limited, a standard or slightly thicker aluminum material is recommended to avoid product defects due to processing errors.
