All-aluminum cans, also known as two-piece cans, are composed of a can body and a can lid, which are manufactured on different production lines using different aluminum alloys. In fact, the can lid is also composed of two workpieces, namely the lid body and the tab-sealing piece. They are produced on highly automated lines using different alloys and aluminum strips of different thicknesses.
The can body is made of 3004 alloy strip with a thickness of 0.25mm-0.29mm, the aluminium cap seal for cans is made of alloy 5182 or 5182 alloy thin strip with a thickness of about 0.27mm, and the pull ring is made of 5052 aluminum alloy and occasionally 5182 alloy. Currently, the countries in the world that can produce body stock and end stock include the United States, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Russia, Australia, China, etc.
More than 97% of can body materials are rolled into coils by semi-continuous ingots on (1+3) or (1+4) hot rolling lines. Then use a cold tandem rolling line or a single-stand four-roller irreversible cold rolling mill to roll into a thin strip of required thickness. The cap seal and the pull ring can be rolled on a general four-roller single-stand hot rolling mill, or on a hot continuous rolling line.
If a plastic bottle of soda is left in direct sunlight for twelve weeks, 15% of the carbon dioxide can be lost. The main alloys for pop cans are 3003, 3004, 5180 and 5052 aluminum sheet. Due to their high hardness, they are generally suitable for later slitting and stamping.
In terms of manufacturing easy-open lids, 5052 alloy is used more, accounting for about 60% of the total, and the thickness is mostly 0.22~0.26mm. 5052 aluminum is used for beverage caps and food caps without internal pressure, and 5182 aluminum is used for beverage caps with internal pressure.
In the production of cans, minimizing the thickness of the sheet, improving the elongation performance and strength of the product, improving material utilization and reducing production costs are the goals pursued by the can manufacturing industry. At present, the thickness of can cover materials is 0.27mm, 0.265mm, 0.26mm, 0.25mm, 0.24mm, and 0.22mm. As the thickness of can cover becomes thinner, higher requirements are placed on the mechanical properties of the 5052 aluminum sheets as the 5052 aluminum sheet thickness reduces.
5052 aluminum alloy has good corrosion resistance, weldability, cold workability, and medium strength. Its surface is very bright after coating. It is widely used in the basic lid of functional drinks. The aluminum alloy 5052 aluminum plate used for can lids has a flat shape and precise thickness control, ensuring a thickness tolerance of ±0.005mm and ensuring stable post-processing.
