Different Types of Aluminum Bottle Cap Materials

2025-09-15

The quality and performance of aluminum bottle caps depend largely on the choice of raw material—the material used. Currently, aluminum bottle cap materials available on the market are primarily available in two forms: aluminum coil and aluminum sheet, corresponding to different commonly used aluminum alloys.

Common Aluminum Alloys

1. 1060 Aluminum Alloy

1060 aluminum alloy belongs to the 1st series pure aluminum, with an aluminum content exceeding 99.6%. It is one of the most basic and commonly used types of aluminum bottle cap material. Its core advantages lie in its excellent ductility and plasticity. During the stamping and stretching processes of bottle cap production, it can easily adapt to complex shapes (such as embossed patterns and brand logos) without cracking or deformation, making it particularly suitable for producing simple, standard bottle caps.

2. 3105 Aluminum Alloy

3105 aluminum alloy belongs to the 3-series aluminum alloy family, with manganese as the primary alloying element. It offers a "balanced performance" for aluminum bottle caps. It addresses the strength shortcomings of 1060 aluminum alloy while maintaining good ductility and workability. It also offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it a mainstream choice for mid- to high-end bottle caps.

Compared to 1060, 3105 aluminum alloy boasts approximately 30% greater strength. After cold rolling or annealing, its impact resistance and deformation resistance are significantly enhanced. It can withstand the forces exerted during bottle cap opening and reduce crushing damage during transportation and storage. Furthermore, its excellent weldability ensures the stability of joints in bottle caps requiring splicing or snap-fitting, preventing loosening and leakage.

3. 8011 Aluminum Alloy

8011 aluminum belongs to the 8-series aluminum alloy family, with iron and silicon as the primary alloying elements. It is the most functional of the three alloy types. Its core features are excellent thickness uniformity, high processing stability, and unique "easy-tear" properties, making it ideal for the production of functional closures that require convenient opening, such as can pull tabs, oral liquid bottle caps, and small-dose condiment bottle caps.

Although its ductility is slightly inferior to that of 1060 aluminum alloy, through precise rolling process control, it can achieve extremely thin thicknesses (down to 0.1-0.2mm) with minimal thickness tolerance across the entire coil and sheet. This is crucial for easy-tear closures that require "precise breaking"—uniform thickness ensures consistent force when opening the pull tab, avoiding problems such as "unable to tear" or "incomplete breaking." Furthermore, 8011 aluminum alloy is highly weather-resistant and resists oxidation in humid and high-temperature environments, extending the shelf life of bottle caps. It's particularly suitable for food and pharmaceutical packaging that requires long-term storage.

Aluminum Coil or Aluminum Sheet?

The color coated aluminum roll is rolled and cold-rolled into a coil. Lengths can reach hundreds or even thousands of meters, and widths can be customized to meet customer needs. For large-scale bottle cap production, aluminum coil is a preferred option because it adapts to continuous processing, significantly improving production efficiency.

From a cost perspective, aluminum coil is generally cheaper to purchase than aluminum sheet of the same material and thickness (because the production process eliminates the costs of cutting and trimming). It also offers transportation advantages—coiled aluminum takes up less space, allows for larger shipments, and reduces unit shipping costs. Therefore, large-scale enterprises, such as breweries and beverage groups, with annual production volumes of millions, tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions of bottle caps, almost always choose aluminum coil as their bottle cap material to achieve cost control and efficiency gains through scaled production.

Aluminum sheet is a sheet material cut from aluminum coil. Common sizes include 1220mm x 2440mm and 1000mm x 2000mm, but custom sizes are also available. Unlike aluminum coil, which is designed for large-scale continuous production, aluminum sheet is more suitable for small-scale, multi-batch production or for customers with customized needs.
